Artificial grass or a real lawn? A guide for London gardens

Lawns struggle in many London gardens: too much shade, heavy clay soil, children and dogs all take their toll. Artificial grass has become a popular answer, but it is not right for every garden.

The case for artificial grass

  • It stays green all year, including in deep shade where real grass thins out.

  • No mowing, feeding or reseeding.

  • It copes well with heavy use from children's play.

  • It suits roof terraces and small courtyards where turf would be impractical.

The case for a real lawn

  • It stays cool underfoot in summer, while artificial grass can get very hot in direct sun.

  • It supports insects, birds and soil life.

  • Rainwater soaks straight into the ground.

  • A well-kept lawn suits larger, traditional gardens in Wimbledon, Richmond, Esher and Cobham.

If you choose artificial grass

The quality of the base matters more than the grass itself.

  • Dig out and remove the existing turf and topsoil.

  • Lay a compacted, free-draining sub-base so water does not pool.

  • Use a weed membrane and a fine levelling layer.

  • Fix the edges properly to timber, steel or stone edging so the grass does not lift.

  • Choose a product with a realistic pile and good UV stability.

If you choose a real lawn

  • Improve drainage first on heavy clay, with sand and organic matter or a drainage layer.

  • Pick a seed or turf mix suited to shade where needed.

  • Set crisp edges with steel, brick or stone so the lawn keeps its shape.
