Health and safety policy
Policy statement of Koniu Construction Ltd. Issued October 2026. Next review: October 2027.
Our commitment
We are committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients, neighbours, members of the public and anyone else affected by our work. We will meet our duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and all other relevant legislation.
Responsibilities
The director has overall responsibility for health and safety and for making sure this policy is put into practice and reviewed at least once a year, or sooner if our work or the law changes. Every employee and subcontractor is responsible for taking reasonable care of their own safety and the safety of others, following safe working procedures and reporting hazards, accidents and near misses.
How we manage health and safety
Construction phase planning: on domestic projects, the client duties under the CDM Regulations 2015 normally pass to us as the contractor, or to the principal designer where the client has agreed this in writing, and we prepare a construction phase plan before work starts that is proportionate to the size and risk of the project.
Risk assessments and method statements: we assess the risks of our activities and of each project, and put suitable control measures in place before work starts.
Asbestos: before work on buildings constructed before 2000, we check for materials that may contain asbestos. If suspect materials are found, work stops in that area until they have been tested and, if necessary, removed by a licensed contractor. Our operatives receive asbestos awareness training.
Dust and hazardous substances: we control dust from cutting stone, tiles, paving and concrete, including silica dust, using water suppression or on-tool extraction and suitable respiratory protection, and we assess adhesives, sealants and other substances under the COSHH Regulations 2002.
Noise and vibration: we control exposure to noise and hand-arm vibration from tools and plant, rotate tasks and use low-vibration equipment where practicable.
Work at height and excavations: we plan work at height under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and use suitable access equipment. Before digging we check for underground services and support or batter back excavations where needed.
Plant, tools and equipment: plant and power tools are used only by trained and competent people, are inspected before use and maintained in safe working order.
Electrical and gas work: electrical work is carried out by qualified electricians in line with BS 7671, and any gas work only by Gas Safe registered engineers.
Manual handling: we plan the lifting and moving of heavy materials, such as stone slabs, baths and bags, use mechanical aids and team lifting where needed.
Personal protective equipment: we provide suitable PPE free of charge and make sure it is used and maintained.
Training and competence: we make sure everyone working for us has the skills, training and experience needed for their work, and we keep records of competence, including CSCS cards where held.
Subcontractors: we only use competent subcontractors, check their qualifications and insurance, and make sure they work to our safety standards.
Accidents and first aid: we provide first aid provision on site, record all accidents and near misses, investigate them, and report incidents under RIDDOR 2013 where required.
Clients’ homes and the public: we keep work areas secure, protect access routes, keep the site tidy, and take extra care where children, elderly people or pets are present.
Welfare: we make sure suitable welfare facilities are available on every site.
Consultation and review
We consult our employees and subcontractors on health and safety matters, monitor how well this policy is working and review it at least once a year.
