Fences, walls and gates: height rules and style ideas

New fencing transforms a garden, adding privacy and a clean backdrop for planting. Before you choose a style, it is worth knowing the height rules.

Do you need planning permission?

Under the national rules for houses in England, set out on the Planning Portal, you will need planning permission for a fence, wall or gate if:

  • It would be over 1 metre high and next to a highway used by vehicles, or the footpath of such a highway.

  • It would be over 2 metres high anywhere else.

Extra restrictions can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas and properties with planning conditions, so check with your council if that applies to you. Trellis added on top of a fence counts towards its height.

Fencing styles for London and Surrey gardens

  • Horizontal slatted fencing: a crisp, modern look that suits contemporary gardens and makes narrow plots feel wider.

  • Closeboard and featheredge: strong, private and traditional.

  • Trellis-topped panels: extra privacy with climbers, while letting light through.

  • Painted fencing in dark greens, greys or black: recedes into the background and makes planting stand out.

  • Brick walls and piers: the most permanent option, often used for front boundaries in period streets.

Building fences that last

  • Set posts in concrete or on proper post supports, and keep timber off the ground.

  • Use pressure-treated or naturally durable timber, and stainless or galvanised fixings.

  • Agree boundary positions with your neighbours before you start.
