Questions to ask before you hire a bathroom contractor

Choosing who builds your bathroom is the most important decision in the whole project. These are the questions worth asking every contractor before you sign anything.

About the quote

• What exactly is included: strip-out, waste removal, plastering, electrics, decorating?

• Which waterproofing system will you use, and where?

• How many square metres of tiling is allowed for, and who supplies the tiles?

• Which fittings are included, and which do I need to buy?

• How are extras priced if something unexpected is found behind the walls?

About the work

• Who will actually be on site each day, and who manages the job?

• What is the schedule, and how long will I be without a bathroom?

• How will you protect floors, stairs and other rooms?

• Who carries out and certifies the electrical work?

• Is any of the work notifiable to building control?

About the business

• Are you insured, and how much public liability cover do you have?

• Can I see photos of similar projects you have completed?

• Can I read reviews from previous clients?

• How are payments staged?

Red flags

• A quote much lower than the others with no itemised breakdown.

• Pressure to pay a large deposit before materials are ordered.

• No clear answer about waterproofing.
